Tiina Burton (who happens to be my sister) is tutoring a creative pattern cutting workshop, for one day only at Oh Sew Brixton, London – in association with, and organised by Etsy.com. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain new skills and learn experimental pattern cutting techniques from an experienced professional, using a hands-on approach within a small class.
Here’s what the lovely lady Tiina has to say:
“I’ve been making clothes and sewing since I was very small and see clothing as wearable sculpture. I love the tactile quality of fabric and all the weird and wonderful things that can be done with it. I was very lucky to study fashion design at the London College of Fashion. Currently I work as a technical lecturer on a fashion degree course in Cambridge, and have a little shop on Etsy selling clothes, patterns and photographs.”
“The workshop will be a fun day of experimental pattern cutting for those who are just beginning their pattern cutting adventure, or who would like to learn new approaches to it. We will start simply by adding volume to basic pattern pieces; then play creatively with abstract shapes and ideas to create forms. You can create samples to take home, and will be shown how the patterns you create could be used to assemble garments.”
“The workshop will involve:
✂ Simple cut and spread patterns. Taking a basic pattern and adding volume. Examples: Bishop sleeve, Lantern sleeve, Circle sleeve.
✂ Shape shifting. Making a shape and sewing multiples together.
✂ Subtractive cutting. Making holes in fabric for the body to travel through.”
