What inspires you?

Fabrics! I've spent a lot of time sourcing the most beautiful fabrics for our line, I love screen prints and use a lot of them in my designs, I seem to be drawn toward nature inspired fabrics so there are a lot of flowers and woodland creatures in my work.

Why did you decide to start a business?

I always knew I wanted to build my own business and had toyed with a few ideas (which didn't work!) but didn't really know what direction I wanted to go in. I started making items with fabrics as just a hobby on Etsy and soon realised this could work as a business.

I think finding something you love to do is the best way forward with any business and from there I jumped in when the company I was working for relocated. Deciding to just go for it and creating Blue Brontide was definitely scary, but worth it!

Has the direction of your business changed over time?

I started my business as a solely handmade business but soon realised with only making small items I would be sat sewing all day everyday with not a lot of time for anything else. So I decided along side the fabric handmade items I needed products I could stock but also fit in with the organic/eco ethos of the brand so I sourced the eco-friendly wooden tableware line which has been a big hit!

What challenges have you faced as a small business owner?

Waking up some days thinking 'is it all worth it'. Some days are hard and you wonder why you're bothering and some days are amazing and you realise all over again why you started your business, it's a massive rollercoaster ride at the moment but it's really early days. I only opened the website in December so it's a bit of a waiting game now to get the business out there and build up followers on my social media pages.

What’s the most rewarding aspect to running your own business?

I think it's the lovely people you meet, I love Instagram it's got a real community vibe where small businesses help other small businesses get noticed and you find some really loyal followers who support what your trying to achieve.

What advice would you give to new businesses that are just starting out?

If you're thinking of starting a business but you're just waiting for the right time to come along, stop. There's never going to be a perfect time, don't talk yourself out of trying, don't underestimate yourself, just do it! (Sorry Nike for stealing your slogan!)

What's next for your business?

Hopefully I'm going to bring out a few new lines shortly, so keep your eyes peeled!!
